Buchenwald was a German Nazi concentration camp it was one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps on German soil. SS authorities opened Buchenwald for male prisoners in July 1937. Women were not part of the Buchenwald camp system until late 1943 or early 1944.Today the remains of Buchenwald serve as a memorial and permanent exhibition and museum.
